Armour Street Theatre (Davidson Baptist Chapel) Recognized as Historic Landmark; Davidson Community Players Plans to Renovate/Expand

Hobbs Hill Neighborhood joins many other residents in downtown Davidson and across Lake Norman in cheering our beloved Davidson Community Players on their prospective strategic plan to acquire and renovate/expand the historic Armour Street Theatre (aka Davidson Baptist Chapel). While these are only initial vision plans, check out their exciting concepts!

One of Hobbs Hill’s leaders, Eric Giangiordano, attended an information-only presentation in 2025 by DCP and supporters to the Davidson Town Board, which enthusiastically endorsed the project concept.

“Steve Kaliski, DCP’s executive director, did an outstanding job engaging with and communicating to the Town, area neighbors, and citizens: their vision of ‘a modernized historical landmark a short walk from Main Street… as a pillar of the village experience’ is impressive,” stated Giangiordano. “Everyone in the Davidson, Lake Norman, and greater Charlotte region, not just those who love the arts, recognizes Davidson Community Players as one of the area’s most significant community arts assets.”

Another meaningful milestone for the community that same evening was the Town of Davidson and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission officially designating the Armour Theatre/Chapel as a local historic landmark.

The site had previously been overlooked in a 2018 audit of potential local landmarks, which led to detailed research and advocacy by Giangiordano, who researched and authored a historical report on the site in 2019 to lobby Town and Commission representatives to reconsider and ultimately help advance its consideration. “While the process took time, it was exciting to finally see the site recognized for its role in the complex history of our westside Davidson, and on behalf of our neighborhood, we’re grateful the Historic Landmarks Commission and Town of Davidson agreed,” stated Giangiordano.

“It complements DCP’s plans to acquire and preserve, while renovating the theatre/chapel, and all of the other exciting growth projects we’re seeing in historic downtown Westside Davidson. And for the local neighbors, including Hobbs Hill, it’s been such a blessing to be able to walk right up the street to enjoy all the different arts and events that DCP and other organizations have hosted at Armour Street Theatre over the past 20 years. We’re excited to hear more updates as these plans move forward!”
